Largo, located
in the middle of the Pinellas peninsula is just
south of Clearwater and just north of St. Petersburg,
has the best of both worlds; it is just minutes
from the beach yet has a family friendly neighborhood
feel with lots of options when it comes to housing.
Largo’s convenient central location makes
it perfect for people who are looking to remain
close to the beach and still have a livable commute
to Tampa. Housing
Largo is a largely residential city, offering
homes in a variety of neighborhoods with a wide
range of prices. Housing in Largo ranges from
rom modestly priced family homes, condominiums
and apartments to million dollar estates and luxury
apartments. Properties are available on the water,
on a golf course or in walking distance to the
downtown area. Things
To Do
There are plenty of things to do in and around
Largo. The city is of course minutes from the
Gulf of Mexico and several of the best Florida
Gulf Coast beaches including Indian Rocks Beach
and Belleair Beach, both of which are nestled
among large houses and rentals and are less crowded
than nearby Clearwater Beach. Largo Central Park
features picnic pavilions, expansive open areas
and numerous fountains as well as the Rainbow
Rotary Playground, which is one of the only playgrounds
in the Bay area completely accessible to disabled
users of all ages.
Golf courses include the public Largo Golf Course,
Bardmoor Golf and Tennis Club, Pinecrest Golf
Club and East Bay Golf Club. Private courses and
clubs include The Tides Golf Club, Fairway Village
Golf Course, Palm Hill Golf Club and Bayou Golf
Club.
For indoor entertainment there is the Largo Cultural
Center which hosts city events, theatre productions,
crafts shows and other events, Ruth Eckerd Hall
in nearby Clearwater also puts on concerts, theater
productions and other entertainment acts, and
the Regal Largo Mall 8 movie theater. Largo is
also just about 30 minutes away from Tropicana
Field in St. Peters burg where the Tampa Bay Rays
play. Dining
and Shopping
As Largo has continued to grow and expand over
the past few years, many more stores and restuarants
have been added. The Largo Mall, an outdoor shopping
center, features Target, Michael’s, Bed,
Bath and Beyond, Bealls, NineWest and PetSmart
as well as several restaurants including Jimmy
John’s Sandwiches, Thai House Restaurant,
Sweet Tomatoes, Red Lobster and Olive Garden.
Largo also has a wide variety of specialty shops
and many other great restaurants like Marlin Darlin
Grill, E & E Steakhouse Grill and the Thirsty
Marlin. Traffic
and Driving
While there are no major interstates running through
or just outside of Largo, it is in close proximity
to US-19 which runs north to nearby Clearwater
and south to St. Petersburg. The Courtney Campbell
Causeway is easily accessible from US-19 and runs
across the bay into Tampa. I-275 is also nearby
and easily accessible and runs across the bay
into Tampa as well. Schools
Public schools include Anona Elementary School,
Fuguitt Elementary School, Oakhurst Elementary,
Ridgecrest Elementary, Fitzgerald Middle, Largo
Middle, Largo High, and Plato South Charter School.
Private schools include Camelot School, St. Patrick
School, Country Day School, Westside Christian
and Indian Rocks Christian. Nearby colleges include
Clearwater Christian College, Eckered College,
USF-St. Petersburg, St. Petersburg College and
Schiller International University. Business
Commerce in Largo is mainly generated from the
health care industry, tourism and hospitality.
The largest public employers are Zhone Technologies
Inc., The Baxter Healthcare Manufacturing, Cox
Target Media, Inc. and Conmed Linvatec. Also,
many commercial buildings in the downtown area
have recently undergone renovations, making them
more attractive to new businesses, shops and restaurants.
