Local Knowledge ## About Tampa Palms Not long ago the area north of USF was mostly pasture and undeveloped land, but after being annexed by the city of Tampa in 1985 and christened New Tampa in 1993, is now becoming a nicely developed area with a lot to offer. New Tampa offers easy access to major highways, new construction, close proximity to a wide variety of shopping, dining and entertainment. Tampa Palms was the first master planned community built in this area. In fact Tampa Palms was named nation's finest master-planned community two times by the National Association of Home Builders. ### Housing Housing construction in New Tampa and Tampa Palms has for the most part been completed in the last 10 years. Each neighborhood offers distinctly different communities with a variety of housing styles. What they all have in common is an appreciation for nature and this is exemplified by the spaces reserved as parks, golf fairways, protected woodlands, nature trails and landscaped vistas found throughout this entire area. There are also newly constructed condominiums, townhouses and apartment communities as well as custom estates. ### Things To Do One of the major attractions of living in Tampa Palms is that there is a golf course in the neighborhood. The private Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club offers a 18 holes of challenging Arthur Hills golf, a junior Olympic-sized swimming pool, complete --fitness center, massage and spa services. There is also the public Pebble Creek Golf Course in New Tampa and the private Hunters Green Golf and Country Club also in New Tampa. Because of this area’s emphasis on nature preservation, most neighborhoods offer paved jogging trails that also line the main roads, nature trails, bike trails, access to the Hillsborough River and many lakes, as well as recreation facilities, swimming pools, play grounds and summer camp programs. There is also an entrance to the 5,400 acre Flatwoods Park which offers a 7 mile paved multi-use trail, an extensive network of unpaved hiking and mountain biking trails, picnic pavilions and an education center. Other area entertainment options include the Muvico Starlight 20 Theater and Peabody’s Billiards. Taking a 15 minute drive north on I-75 or Bruce B Downs will take you to the Cobb Cinebistro of Wesley Chapel which offers 16 regular movie theaters and one that serves fantastic food and regular and adult beverages, including a full liquor bar and lounge. ### Dining and Shopping Aside from the usual Wal-Mar and Target New Tampa and Tampa Palms offer a variety of specialty and niche stores. Also just a 10-15 minute drive north to Wesley Chapel are The Shops at Wiregrass and The Grove at Wesley Chapel, both are fairly new pedestrian-friendly, outdoor village style shopping centers that have outdoor plazas, side walks and benches. At both you will find large big-name department stores, specialty shops, high end bars and restaurants. There is an eclectic assortment of restaurants in the New Tampa/Tampa Palms area including LeeRoy Selmon’s, Acropolis Greek Taverna, Bonsai Sushi, Bonefish Grill, Ciccio’s Lodge, JimmyJohns, MIracle’s & Maggie’s Tea Room, Red Robin and Saffron’s Indian Cuisine. ### Traffic and Driving There can be some congestion at peak rush hour times in the area where Bruce B Downs meets I-75. Construction has recently been completed which has alleviated some of the congestion and additional construction has been going on to lessen it even more.
